How I got my first marketing job
By the time I had graduated from my Master’s Degree I had pretty much set my mind on going into marketing. There was just one problem…
My degree had absolutely nothing to do with marketing. Which would put my collective experience in the field at about nothing.
And if I didn’t realise how little experience I had in the field then, I sure knew it once I started applying for jobs. Of the 100 or so first applications I sent out, I got a big fat 0 responses.
I needed to change my strategy as I was getting nowhere fast.
Then I realised how stupid I was being. I wanted to be a marketer… so I need to market myself.
And so I wrote the following cover letter:
5 Incredible Reasons Why You Should Consider Me
I am a recent Finance Post Graduate with genuine passion for marketing and SEO. I am looking to take the first steps in my marketing career and here are 5 reasons why I could be a great pick.
1. My Interest in Marketing is Natural
Just over a year ago, I started writing a blog for fun. I enjoyed writing and wanted to share that with the world. My interest in SEO and marketing grew out of my vision for what I wanted my blog to become. This is a factor that I believe would make me perhaps more focused and committed than if I were in it for the money or simply because I had studied it for a degree.
2. I learned how to blog through blogging
The blog that I started had one clear goal: take the topics that were either boring or difficult to understand and make them fun and engaging by comparing them with video games. This work has helped sharpen my literary edge and me me a far better content writer than the years I spent writing Politics and Finance essays, for university, ever could.
3. I’ve grown through overcoming rejection
As of January this year, I have officially graduated as a MSc in Management and Finance. I am unbelievably proud of this because I originally had my application rejected. I was told me lack or experience in a quantitative subject like Finance would hold me back (I had graduated with a BA in Politics). I needed to convince them that giving me a shot was worth it and personally spoke with the administrator of the course. I was told that I would struggle and they did not want me to take out a student loan only to drop out. With this in mind, I decided it was not enough to pass the course but to excel, and I am very happy to say that I graduated in the top quarter percentile for the course.
4. I designed my own website through WordPress
As part of my CV, you can see my portfolio of websites that I designed. While I had originally no idea how to do this, I understood the importance of it from an SEO point of view. So I began my research, and learned the skill through a combination of videos, courses and articles online. Now I am not only comfortable using the platform but I have also helped others to build their own sites.
5. I love to learn
As I mentioned before, I do not have a marketing degree, in fact I have no formal training of any kind when it comes to marketing. All the knowledge that I have accumulated is completely self taught. I believe with additional training, I could truly flourish and provide plenty of value.
Was this perfect? No, of course not. But I got me into an interview. And from there I got my first ever job in marketing. And I haven’t looked back since.
